Staging boards are available in the following lengths:
- 2.5 metre.

They are typically used to gain access and work from height, and so a staging board can be used by many different trades and sectors, including for painting, plastering, electrical works, roofing, gutters, soffits and facias, window replacement, cladding, music events, fairs, and festivals plus much more.
Builders’ trestles or scaffolding towers generally support this item with an overlap of 300mm on either end.
This item comprises an aluminium frame on the board’s outside, and the board is made from marine plywood decking with a phenyl mesh coating to prevent slipping.
This product is available in two widths, 450 millimetres or 600 millimetres.
The longest Youngman-style staging board we supply is 7.1 metres in a 450mm or 600mm width.
This product’s shortest length is 2.5 metres.
Below are the approximate weights of each board by length and width:
- 2.5m (450mm wide) – 13.0kg.
- 2.5m (600mm wide) – 14.0kg.
- 3.0m (450mm wide) – 15.0kg.
- 3.0m (600mm wide) – 16.0kg.

They are mainly known as staging boards, youngman boards or aluminium stagings.
You can use steel builders’ trestles with this product to create a safe working platform. Only two 450mm boards will fit a trestle width of 900mm.
Scaffolding boards are made from European whitewood timber, whereas a staging board is made from marine decking with an aluminium frame.
When using this product with builders’ trestles, you should adjust the trestles to the desired height and space them the correct distance apart. Then, lay the staging board across the gap between each trestle. Handrail supports, where required, should then be installed.
Yes, handrails can be installed on staging boards. The system consists of vertical handrail posts and aluminium tubes as the handrails. The quantities will vary for each product depending on the factors below:
- Whether you need single or double handrails (either side of the board).
- The length of the staging board will determine the number of posts.
For example
- A single-sided double handrail set for a 6m staging board would require 4x vertical posts and 2x 20ft aluminium scaffold tubes (top and bottom rails).
- A double-sided top and bottom handrail set would need 8x vertical posts and 4x 20ft aluminium tubes.
The items we sell to create a handrail system are the posts that are attached to the boards and alloy tubes that are connected to the posts to make up the handrails. Timber scaffolding planks may also be used as toeboards and are secured to the handrail posts.
It is strongly recommended that a handrail system is installed because they are an essential safety requirement to prevent falling or slipping from height.
Yes, 2x scaffolding towers can support the staging boards at either end.
Each bearer on the alloy frame of this product is spaced approximately 290mm apart.
These boards are rated class 1 and comply with BS2037 British standards.
Yes, you can remove and replace the plywood decking and replace it with a new one.
The maximum safe working load for both widths of a staging board is a 270kg distributed load rate.
The thickness varies depending on the length of a staging board:
- 2.5m to 4.2m in length, the depth is approximately 7 centimetres.
- 4.8m to 7.1m in length, the depth is approximately 10 centimetres.
The staging board is class one certified, and the marine plywood decking is class 3 (weather and boil proof).
- It can be used in conjunction with guardrails.
- Non-slip rot-proof decking.
- Rubber inserts for additional grip.
- Aluminium struts.
- Rubber end caps.
- ‘K’ straps – fitted to end struts.
- Ensure a risk assessment has taken place.
- Ensure PPE is always worn when handling a staging board, building, and using the working platform.
- A ladder may be required to access the working platform safely.
- Ensure the persons installing the staging platform are competent.
Yes, they are reasonably easy to handle and should be lifted by two people for safety.
It is recommended that staging boards should not be used for anything other than working platforms and should never be used as wheelbarrow ramps or even work benches.
Hard hats, gloves, and safety footwear are recommended for increased personal safety.
They provide a safe and secure working platform for painting, decorating, or other types of maintenance work as they create a wider working area for users to have increased movements whilst working from height versus a ladder. They are a sturdy and convenient product for builders and DIYers to use.
